Message from the Editorial Team

Welcome to the second newsletter from Threshold.
In May, we wrote 55 news pieces and 5 articles.

Some in our community have asked us why we don’t write about P3D or other flight simulators. The reasons are practical rather than out of dislike or unwillingness. We have immense respect for the other simulators and see a use case for all of them. Our decision not to cover Prepar3D (P3D) is based on our team's lack of consistent resources and expertise. We believe in providing high-quality, in-depth coverage and can only achieve this for platforms with sufficient knowledge and interest. As our team expands and our capabilities grow, we remain open to exploring new areas, but our current focus allows us to maintain the quality our readers expect.

A Short History of Threshold

Threshold started out as an idea when Peter Tram and Magnus Lorvik, the two founders of Threshold, co-administrated the Facebook group XPNG. We were purely X-Plane-oriented then and never wrote about anything other than X-Plane until MSFS came in 2020. At this point in time, we made an internal vote on whether we should include MSFS in our reporting. We decided to write about what we are interested in within our capacity. So, MSFS became a part of what we write about. Since then, we haven’t felt we have staff with enough knowledge or the capacity to expand. Writing about a simulator demands staff with knowledge and interest in the given simulator, and last year, we found the time ripe to include DCS in our editorial.

The editorial was first published in February 2018. Threshold's editorial was our main focus, and it was launched to address the lack of reliable flight simulation news. Initially focused on X-Plane, it expanded to include Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) in 2020 and DCS in 2023. Today, we are proud to say it is one of the leading sources of flight simulation news.

The Threshold store was established in March 2018. It was designed to be a fair platform for developers and customers. Competing directly with the established, it aimed to maintain a "good guy" reputation and ensure fair practices in its operations.

The forum was created in August 2018. It has become a vibrant hub with over 110,000 members, serving as a space for discussions, resource sharing, and community support.

The Aerodrome Project launched in late 2023 and had a soft launch in April 2024. Aerodrome aims to improve add-on scenery quality in X-Plane and MSFS through community-driven knowledge sharing. This project is still under development, but feel free to join and contribute to it.

Threshold's growth and success are rooted in its commitment to high standards and community engagement. The platform consists of volunteers worldwide who contribute their expertise and passion. This model ensures the content remains authentic and reflects the community's interests.

Editor’s Choice Article

This time, we are going back to an old but still highly relevant article. We are taking a look at console-based simulators.

“Since the console release of Microsoft Flight Simulator in 2020, there's been a lot of nit-picking about what it means to be a “real” flight simmer. I've always found it quite strange that people who enjoy a hobby talk down to others who enjoy the same hobby simply because they're doing it differently.”
